Well I finally managed to get started. Cut the bottom out of my 30 gallon paint pot and now have it ready to weld in heating fins. Hope to get that done early next week. Believe me, with Diesel hitting $3.199 per gallon my wife has finally decided I need to get this thing going. YEEHAAAW. Took pic's, but haven't down loaded them to the computer yet.

Post your progress.

Im feeling a bit of a traitor to the cause here , I got stuck into filtering the pile of drums of vege oil behind my shed and have beenburning that in the car lately .
I got a bit of a motor oil stock pile happening tho , 1000 litres and growing .... dammit , and Im in the middle of building another still , instead of a seperator type unit , Im just going to have a higher vapour outlet , to my thinking , that means the heavier oils that need more processing / boiling dont make it out the spout that way , and instead of getting piped back to be heated over again , they have no option but to go back into the boiler and bubble some more .
Seems to work for me on the old one anyway , tho I had some issues with water and rust and stuff in that one , something to do with leaving it openin the rain a few times I think :)
Good to know youre getting into it , do not give up !!
I had a shock last night , I sold a car and thought Id do the right hting , I took it in and filled the tank for the guy .... that hurt , I been runing on free fuel for a while and forgot that ifuel is $1.52 a litre here .... 50 litres later I was thinking Im a mug for doing the right thing here ....

Hey stripe... What is the length on that tank? Have you figured out how much the capacity will be while it is running? I found the smarter the better... If you have too much height it will cool off and condense back into the boiler.

Hi Guy,
Tank is 51" tall, only 14" diameter. I figure to run approx 20"s of Oil to start. Will wrap the boiler with either Superwool or the Rock Wool I can get from the Boatyards. Will put in several Temp sampling outlets so I can learn what is the best.

Well after a bit of a detour, Honey Do's:rolleyes: , I got back to work on things today. Got the bottom of the Woodford Burner put together and welded all the inside heating fins in the boiler. My Temp Guages should be here this week, so if work doesn't interfer to much I'll keep going. Posted a couple of pic's of todays progress.

Looks good! I like the heat transfer fins... Looks like it will work. You are making more progress than I am right now... I need to go see if my fabricator is even working today.

Well I just found out that I'm working 4 out of the next 5 days :( . The one day I have off I need to Bottle Beer, so looks like no work on the plant this week.
hmmmm
looks like you got your priorities all mixed up there ....
you should be spending quality time with the beer , working on the plant , and *maybe* finding some time for work there .....
:)
Comon guys , I got holes cut in my 44 gallon drum allready and Im working on a werido hybred type oil burner ....
Im tossing up if I use a bigger gasbottle for my boiler of a stainless steel keg I found
the bottle is bigger , but I posted pics of problems I allready had with my boiler melting ( maybe there is such a thing as too much heat after all ? )
the keg will take more heat ,but its not got the volume i want ....
I wish people would chuck our better stuff at the dump !

Hey Karl,
I'll spend the quality time with the beer, but only after it ages a bit.:) Since I only work during the summer, my work season is upon me. Gotta make the green while the sun shines.
I'll "Git-R-Done" though before to long and then the smile on my face will be visible clear over where your at.:D
That cool , since Im retired ( sorta ) I dont have to worry too much about work ... my pension happens regardless .
Ive decided to go with the smaller keg for my boiler , and use the oil burner set up that my cuz gave me pictures for .
I dont realy understand it , but I built one for trial in my yard and it worked good , made plenty heat with near on no draft , with a chimney itll do oK , even better if I hook a hair dryer or two into it again .
when I get around to it , Ill post pics , first have to weld up the holes in the keg , some nice guy punched a mess of holes in it before they threw it away .Got to get some pipes and taps and float valves sorted too for the burner . I want it to just work nicely while I go do other stuff , im tired of having to be watching it always always while it works .

Well I finally got a chance to do a bit more on the boiler. Welded the bottom in and then poured water in to check for leaks. Weeped a bit in several places so I'll run another bead or 2 around it and check again. Hope to get most of the Fabrication work done next week.
Karl, been spending some quality time with the Coopers Nut Brown Ale I made, MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.
One of these days I'll be retired to.
Ive had a hold up with my new plant , materials are just not forthcoming :)
I have decided to go with a water heater tank as a boiler , and Im going to stick a water pipe or two up the center of the boiler as chimney .
I been seeing just how much heat radiates off the chimney of my wood heater and it seems to me that there is a lot of good heat going to waste the way I was going to have mine made .
Good to hear something is going right even if its not home brew fuel right now tho :)

Well I finally got to do a bit of work on the plant. Got the bottom sealed up, welded in an Inlet (3/4 inch), and Outlet(1\2 inch), several 1\2 inch outlets for thermometers, and the heating fins around the outside. If work doesn't interfer to much I should be working on the furnace, etc. later in the week. Posted a pic of what's happened so far.
Now it's time for a couple of Brews to quench the thirst I've developed while sweating over a Hot Welder.;)
Oilguy, I may need to remodel this if yours works like it looks like it should.:D

Well it sure seems like the gods are against me on this. Everytime I think I have some time, work jumps up and bites me again. Gonna get the kid to fire off his Biodiesel setup for me this week for some price relief on fuel. Still plan on getting this unit operational but it's gonna be sometime this winter before I get any time to mess with it.

Hey OG, I think one of us will suceed, eventually. I think it will be awesome when we do. I really think there is more than one way to successfully "skin" this kitty. I also think that once we get a few of these units running, it would be great to share fuel with other members if they are traveling the country. Kinda get to know each other on a more personal level and see just what each one has done.
